Expectations Vs Reality

I don't know if it is the same at your school, but during the last few weeks of the year our teachers don't give us homework. This means we have more time to
1. Enjoy the summer weather.
Or
2. Watch YouTube videos

Recently, I have discovered Expectations Vs Reality Videos. You know when you expect something to be really good but it doesn't live up to expectations? These videos allow you to see other people's disappointments and are often quite funny as well. A few people do them, but I particularly like AlishaMarie's.

She also shows you useful things to make, her morning routines for different days and fashion tips. I have recently featured another one of her videos, What To Do When You Are Bored In Summer. I think she is great.

What do you think of Alisha Marie? What YouTube channels do you like?

Hair Styles

Your hair is a part of your outfit you never take off. It can completely transform your look, and the same style can look totally different on different people. My hair is naturally straight and a dark blonde. I like my hair long, with feathering at the front. I am having my hair hi-lighted in the summer holidays as a birthday present, as my hair has become darker now I'm older and I want to be a lighter shade again. I would have layers cut in it, but we have to have it tied up for school.

I don't really see why we have to have it tied up for school. The school say it is to "make us look tidy" but a messy ponytail looks just as scruffy as windswept hair. Most schools let their pupils have it down, except for PE and Home Ecc. Also, when our uniform is so restrictive, having more options with hair styles gives us more individuality. I usually have a side ponytail or loosely part my hair in bunches down the front so it is as close as possible to having my hair down.

Choosing your hairstyle at the hairdressers can be daunting as it can be difficult to fix if you don't like it. A couple of weeks ago, I saw an interesting magazine called "I want that hair". It is a collection of amazing hairstyles for you to browse through to find your favourite. This is the website.
There are also several apps that allow you to try out different hairstyles on a photo of yourself. These are even better as you can see what styles suit you, not just what you like.

What hairstyle do you have at the moment?

The Books Of Beginning

A little while ago, I mentioned that I had finally got hold of The Black Reckoning a book I have wanted to read for ages. It is part of a trilogy called the Books Of Beginning. I have read it now and I think it is the perfect conclusion to the series.

At first, I wasn't that impressed with the Black Reckoning. The first half was good, but not as good as the first book in the series, The Emerald Atlas. However, as the story reached the climax, the book became much more gripping and the ending couldn't have been any better. The theme of love is important throughout the series, but this became as important as the books themselves at the end.

Many critics say that the author, John Stephens, got all the ideas for the series from other books. For most of the series, this is very true. The idea in the first book of them growing up in an array of terrible homes is very similar to A Series Of Unfortunate Events (another favourite of mine) and there are many other ideas that have come from Phillip Pulman books. However, the simple theme of love is used in a way that I have never come across before. It makes you think about the world in a different way.

I would definitely recommend this series, especially to fans of Phillip Pulman's Dark Materials series, also known as the Golden Compass series.

Selfies

Selfies do seem like a good idea. You want to take a photo of you or you and your mates but don't have anyone to take it. What do you do? You take a selfie! It's really easy if you have a reversible camera, not so easy if you don't (like me). I have attempted many times to do a "blind selfie" (one without looking) to end up with only half a face. Funny, but not what you would call successful.

However, have we gone too far? Spending your entire life taking photos (as some teens do) isn't necessarily a good thing. You might want a record of special moments, but I think it is sometimes better to just enjoy them there and then. How much time do you spend looking at old photos anyway?

Also, I do think that some of the "accessories" for selfie lovers are a bit ridiculous. Selfie sticks are a prime example of this. They look a bit stupid, take up room in your handbag and are slightly unnecessary. Yes, ok, they take photos from further away, but I have taken many selfies without them and they were fine. My best friend and fellow blogger has one. I have seen her use it once, but she took ages trying to get it to work and there were other people with us that could have taken the photo.

So overall, selfies: good, unless you are obsessed. What do you think?

Animal

Normally, I am not big on brands. I usually feel you are paying mostly for the name rather than the item. For me, there are two main exceptions: Kipling and Animal. Both of them make really good quality items that are practical and last a long time. I don't normally buy designer clothes because I prefer to have a variety of less expensive things rather than a few more costly items. However, with bags and coats I tend to have the same one for a long time. Also, there are outlets for both stores in Gunwharf Quays in Portsmouth. If I buy things cheaper there then it is even more worth it.

Animal are quite a sporty brand, particularly focusing on skateboarding and surfing but they also do snowboarding, skiing, mountain biking and BMX. They have a group of riders for each sport and a youth team of younger riders. Meet them here. This is why their clothes are so practical. It also means they do wetsuits, skateboards and surfboards.

Another thing I love about Animal is that they have a lot of brightly coloured, fun things. This is partly I think down to the fact they are a younger brand. My schoolbag is from there. It has stripes in all colours of the rainbow, just about as far as you can get from my school's navy blue uniform! I love it.

When I was in junior school, I had an amazing parka from Animal which I loved and wore until it fell apart. It was cream with an orange lining. I have never been able to get a coat quite that good again. I got a parka from O'Neill last Christmas which I love as well, but it just isn't the same.

I was going to show you some of their clothing, but I think based on how much I have written so far I will save that for another day!

As many of you know, I am a major bookworm. I read a lot in the holidays and was looking online for lists of recommended books for teenagers. Polished

This evening I have been catching up on the first episode of Humans on Youtube. As usual, there were lots of adverts, but as well as the standard ones there was an advert for a Youtube channel called Polished. This is a channel created by a group of girls who all love fashion, make-up, beauty and style. This is their channel.

They do videos about favourite products, make-up tutorials and "get ready with me videos" where a couple of the girls get ready for a particular situation on screen, showing you their choice of hair, make-up and outfits. They are also asked a group of random questions so you can learn a bit about them. At the end, they show you their final result. This video shows them getting ready for a day at the beach.

Their videos can be useful if you want to know how to achieve a different look or need ideas for an outfit. Their channel can also be watched for fun if you are a person who likes that sort of thing. Tell me what you think of their channel in the comments.

For When It's Not On The High Street

As well as fathers day, it was my dad's birthday today. It was also my parents anniversary last week. My dad is hard to buy for at the best of times, so you can probably imagine that with 3 celebrations in such a small space of time we often run out of ideas. You might think that with father's day so close, there would be lots of suitable gifts in the shops, but most of the father's day stands are pretty rubbish. What dad is going to want Peppa Pig t-shirts and pizzas made from jelly sweets?

This year, we got some of his presents from Not On The High Street.Com. They do really good personalised presents. They have some really interesting and unusual things. My mum bought my dad some cuff links in the shape of his initials for his birthday and a framed list of things they have done together for their anniversary. Their products are often quite expensive though. They also sell clothes, jewellery and garden items as well as gifts for weddings, birthdays, other occasions and the home.
Have a look at their gift ideas: http://www.notonthehighstreet.com/

What Colour Are You?

I am definitely a person who likes colour. I love anything bright and bold, usually choosing clothes that are brightly coloured, especially in summer. I do sometimes wear black, white, dark blues, pastels and occasionally grey but I really hate colours that have been "dulled down". Many of my teenage friends prefer these colours, probably because they do not make you stand out as much. I like to dress boldly as I am not afraid of the excess attention! You may have noticed that many of the clothes I choose from the internet are brightly coloured too.

I think the main reason for this is I find that dull colours dulls down my mood. I find bright blues and yellows uplifting and dreary colours make be feel the opposite. I also can't help wondering if that is the reason I am much more optimistic than most people. More likely though, I like bright colours because I am optimistic.

I have found on the internet what your favourite colour says about you. My favourite colour is yellow, which makes a lot of sense as I am creative, bight and happy. What is your favourite colour? Does this chart match up with you?

8 Out Of 10 Cats Does Countdown

8 Out Of 10 Cats is a good, if slightly mad and very rude quiz programme based on statistics played by a bunch of comedians. Countdown is, as many of you know, a boring and serious daytime show where geeky people prove their intelligence. But, for some strange reason, if you put them together they make a brilliant TV show.

All of the regular people from 8 Out Of 10 Cats participate: Jimmy Carr the presenter, team leaders Jon Richardson and Sean Lock and Joe Wilkinson (who usually just gets in the way!). These are joined by the usual Rachel Riley and Susie Dent, along with a selection of special guests. All the comedians in it is what makes it so good, as in between the small amounts of Maths and English there are all sorts of jokes.

You are still laughing while they do the questions as Jimmy tries to distract them with an assortment of things that include space hopper races, kittens and magic acts! Here is a clip showing what happened on one of the occasions!

It is one of my favourite comedy shows and is usually on Friday nights from 9 until 10 on channel 4.

Bikinis and Swim Suits

As you know, I have been showing you my favourite summer clothing articles from around the web recently, in preparation for the next couple of months. I realised today that this selection could not be complete without a blog dedicated to swim suits and bikinis. I usually wear bikinis but I have included some all in ones as well as I know some people prefer to cover up. I have chosen ones from teenage ranges instead of adults as the top tends to fit better and they are usually less revealing.

This all in one is very simple in style as it
is designed for sport. However, it's colourful
iridescent pattern means it could be worn
for leisure if you are not the sort of person
who likes girly or revealing swimwear.
Next, £19
Teens Turquoise Colour Block Bikini Set | New Look
This is my favourite! The black trim makes it
really grown up and looks great with the
pale blue. It also has a bit more support in
the chest area.
New Look, £9.99
Teens Blue Tie Dye Halter Neck Bikini Set | New Look
This bikini is good for people who want to wear a
nice bikini without showing the whole world
your chest area. I love the blue tie die effect,
it is very summery.
New Look, £9.99
Teens Turquoise Laser Cut Flounce Swimsuit | New Look
This is a more elaborate all in one compared to the
others on this page. Just because you don't want
to wear a bikini doesn't mean your swimming
costume has to be boring. I love the colour.
New Look, £12.99
Teens Green Tropical Print Bikini Set | New Look
This cool bikini has a jungle inspired print, perfect
for exotic holidays. It is not too girly either.
I love halternecks!
New Look, £9.99
Teens Black Really A Mermaid Swimsuit | New Look
This swimming costume is all black to give you a
slimming effect. It is not too boring though,
because of the slogan.
New Look, £12.99
This bold bikini also has a tropical theme.
The black palm tree silhouette and trim makes a nice
contrast against the coloured background.
It is interesting to look at without being too fussy.
Peacocks, £8

This bandeau bikini has a grown up
style with a cool stripey pattern
The bright blue is a fab colour,
perfect for summer.

Bored This Summer?

I am generally the sort of person who is very good at keeping busy, but sometimes even I get bored. Also, some of my friends often say they are bored. I was planning to do a list of my recommendations, but I came up with a better idea. So, here is my list of some good youtube videos that are full of summer inspiration. They are also quite entertaining to watch too. Perfect for the long, oncoming summer break.

50 Things To Do When You're Bored in Summer! by beautyqueen18 is an extensive list of simple things you can do if you're board. However, it is not quite so creative as the ones below.

What To Do When You're Bored in Summer! Alisha Marie. This video was actually what inspired me to do this post. It is very funny as well as useful (once you get past her annoying voice). I loved the paint twister!

What to do when your bored in summer by Caroline Tucker This one has some good ideas to do with a group of friends.

Finding The Fox

Ali Sparkes is probably my favourite author. She wrote my favourite book, Frozen In Time, which I love soooo much I have read it 6 times. I met her when I was 8, as she came to my school for world book day. At the time, I was sure I wanted to be an author myself (now I'm torn between graphic designer, author and possibly environmental activist!). It really inspired me to see an author who was not a grey haired person old enough to be retired (which, it seemed to me at that age, all children's authors were). I found her talk really interesting too.

Recently, I have read another one of her books, Finding the Fox. It is the first in the shapeshifters series and I love it! It is about a boy called Dax who discovers he can turn into a fox, causing him to be whisked off to a special school for other gifted children. Even though he is happy there, things are not all that they seem and they soon become very dangerous. It was so exciting that I was even shaking at one point reading it! That has only ever happened to me whilst reading one other book.

I think this is because of the way Ali writes about danger and death in this book. When lots of characters die in a book or film, less is made of it. However, because there are fewer incidences, he is younger and his fox instincts can "smell danger" it becomes a much bigger thing. This makes it more thrilling, even if ordinarily the story line isn't that exciting. Also, she creates a really good sense of suspense and approaching danger earlier on so when the action does come it has more of an impact.

Overall, I think it is a really good read. Definitely up to her usual standard!

Birthday Shopping

Yesterday we went shopping for my Dad's birthday (it's next weekend, the same day as father's day!). That was why I didn't post, we were out all day. We went to Hedge End in Hampshire (south of England). As well as a huge Marks and Spencers there, they have recently build a gigantic Next.

Even though we were not shopping for me, I still managed to buy some things for me. I bought a summer dress and a pair of denim shorts, although these were not any of the ones shown in past blog posts on these topics. The shorts are from Next and are made of a dark, soft, comfortable jegging material. They come a short way down my leg and have rolled up bottoms.

My new dress was from M&S children's range. I don't normally buy many children's clothes, but the M&S range are mostly quite grown up and go up to age 14. Also, most of the adult clothes are a bit too old for us, although I have bought a nice dress in there once before. This dress was made of a yellow broderie anglaise material with a yellow lining. It is sleeveless with a shirt-like bodice and a skirt that comes just above the knee. It is casual enough that I can wear it all the time.

Have you been shopping recently?

Denim Shorts

With summer officially here, denim shorts are everywhere at the moment. As they are a summer staple among most teenage girls, I decided to feature my favourite from around the internet.

These shorts are not made of normal denim.
Instead, it is more of a jegging material.

Also, these are a little longer than
the hot pants, which some people prefer.

Parisian White Ripped Raw Hem Shorts | New Look
These are a little different, being white.
They are simple and sweet.

The Vicar Of Dibley

The Vicar Of Dibley is a comedy series set in a traditional village in the English countryside. This changes when a female vicar is brought in, much to the annoyance of the leader of the parish council. I know that sounds really boring but it is actually very very funny when the vicar is played by Dawn French! Her crazy friend Alice is also very funny, who is played by Emma Chambers. She is completely mad and very stupid. She never gets the vicar's jokes and had bridesmaids dressed as teletubbies at her wedding! It was written by Richard Curtis. He also wrote Blackadder, 4 Weddings and a Funeral and Notting Hill (all of which I like).

The series is quite old, it was filmed about 10 years ago and at times it can be a little dated. I still really like it though. It is not normally on TV much as it is so old but at the moment they are showing it on Friday evenings on BBC1. They don't repeat it often, we should watch it while we can.

Grandparents- Even Worse Than Parents?

A few months ago, I did a post about my embarrassing parents. Actually they are not the only problem, or even the worst problem, in my family. For me, the most mad, embarrassing and in some cases over protective people are my Grandparents.

My Gran is lovely but very, very mad. She often says mad stuff like "Houses have feelings and they sometimes try to fight you!" and "that man over there, he looks like he lives across the road!" She has an obsession with ironing, and will iron anything that stays still long enough. This includes pants and socks. She is also very over protective. She hates it whenever I leave the house without an adult, even if it is just to walk up the road. Once, she went as far as saying that I won't be able to walk home from the nearby College alone when I am 16. She has also said that I am never allowed to London ever again on a School trip in case terrorists decide to bomb the exact part of London I will be in on the very same day as I am there. When ever I have a school trip, we never tell her until I've been.

My Grandma can sometimes be a bit mad, but she is not as crazy as my Gran. She still calls my Dad  "my little boy" even though he is nearly 6 foot tall. She called me half pint until recently, when she had to stop because I am now as tall as her! She is also very forgetful, often having what she calls a "senior moment".

My Grandad can sometimes be quite horrible. He thinks he's funny when he teases people but it's just annoying. He also has a habit of sometimes treating me like a 3 year old and he thinks he knows everything.  He still can't work out why his trousers are getting longer though. It's because they have to sit under his belly now! I think my Grandparents are much worse than my parents. Is this the same for you? What are your Grandparents like?

The Pros and Cons Of Cruising

My family have booked a cruise for next year on the P&O ship Ventura. We are going for a week and will be visiting the ports of Guernsey, Spain and Portugal. I have been on a cruise ship once before when I was six and my parents and my Grandma have been lots of times so I know quite a lot about them. Here is my list of pros and cons for cruising for teenagers.

Pros
They generally have a really good teenage club. Some ships are better than others. The Ventura has a cool hangout with sofas and computers. They have disco's and movie nights in the evenings. Perfect if you would rather not spend too much time with your family.
The ships have good facilities. Most of them have multiple pools, bars, lounges and sports facilities as well as a spa, a theatre and cinema. Some of the bigger ships (particularly the Royal Caribbean ships) have extra's including things like a surf simulator, an ice rink, a rock climbing wall and a water splash park.
You get to dress up in the evenings. Most nights the dress code is smart casual but there are always a few Black Tie or Gala nights where you get to really dress up. Most people wear cocktail dresses or some other type of evening gown. I love getting all dressed up. Last time I was a bit too young to appreciate it but now I'm older I am looking forward to it. I am pleased that you only have to do it a few nights though as I don't think I would want to dress up fully every night of the week. If you are the sort of person who hates wearing dresses or make-up (like my friend from school, she knows who she is!) see the cons section.
On P&O ships, the food is amazing. Every sort of breakfast you can think of, tasty lunch, afternoon tea, 5 course dinner and the all day buffet. You can eat as much as you like of this food as it is all included in the price!
You only spend a day or two in each place. It doesn't matter if there is not much to do at your destination. You won't be there long.

Cons
You have to dress up for dinner. At our age, you are going to have to wear a formal dress, or at least some smart alternative at some stage of the cruise.
There is a limited amount for teenagers to do. If you're bored of the teen club and the weather isn't good enough to use the pool or the other facilities outside, you have less choice on the days at sea.
On some of the ships (mainly the foreign companies) the food can be unfamiliar.
Unless you are willing to pay a lot of money, the cabins are small. Obviously, as you are on a ship, space is at a premium. There probably will be bunk beds or possibly bed settees.

Have you ever been on a cruise? What do you think of them?

Exams

Today is the first day of exam week. At our school, we had a "revison week" last week when all we did in lessons was revise what we had done over the last year (boring). Now we have an entire week of formal exams and revison periods. I have not been looking forward to this. I don't mind exams too much, they're a bit of a pain and take up time but I like to see how I'm getting on and I don't get too stressed about them. This year, I have been revising a lot because I want to get the best possible scores to end Key Stage 3, so I feel that I am fully prepared.

Today I had quite a hard day. We had History, Geography, French and Biolagy all in one day. I think it all went ok although geography was quite hard. Tomorrow is easier. We only have 3 exams.

However, some of my friends are no where near as calm. Some people get really stressed about exam week, either because a lot is expected of them, they are not prepared or the idea of proving what you have learnt really freaks them out. I do think the school puts quite a lot of pressure on us considering that these are not our GCSE's, but on the other hand we need to get used to doing important tests ready for year 11. I think I will be ok, as if I can do these tests without stressing then I won't be too bad in year 11 but what about the people who can't cope now? What are they going to do when confronted with a month or so of tests that affect the rest of their lives? Are GCSE's too much for 16 year olds, or will we all be a lot better at this sort of thing then?

Blackle

Most of the UK's energy comes from fossil fuels. As you are probably aware, fossil fuels create greenhouse gasses. These lead to global warming which is causing all sorts of problems. We need to save energy in any small ways we can: Turning the TV off, walking to school and using Blackle. Blackle is a search engine powered by Google where the majority of your screen is black. All the little lights that make up your computer screen will be turned off instead of displaying white light.

This means that if you set it to your home screen or even just have it on your favourites bar and use it instead of normal Google you will save a little energy. It may only be a little but it all adds up and if everyone used it, we would save loads. They have a running total of the amount of energy saved on their home screen and it's pretty impressive. Try it out and tell your friends. Click here to have a look.

Pyjama Shopping

At our age, most of the children's pyjamas are too babyish but some of the adult ones are too sexy, see through or old ladyish. A couple of weeks ago, I bought some really nice mix and match pyjamas. These are the bottoms. I also bought a white T-shirt with broderie anglaise detail on the pocket:

Embroidered Pyjama Shorts
I really like them. Today, we went back to ASDA. We bought another similar set, this time with a blue top. These bottoms were £6.

Dobby Cropped Pyjama Bottoms

These pyjamas are perfect for teens as their simplicity means they are not restricted to any particular age group. The blue top is better though as it is not as see through as the white top.

While shopping I also saw a something else that caught my eye....

Lemon Cross Body Bag
A lemon bag!
This cool and unusual bag is
the perfect summer accessory.
I know it has nothing to do with
pyjamas, but I had to include it.

Screen Addiction

I find, as a generation, we are very screen centred. Most of us spend a lot of time hooked up to some kind of screen, whether it is a TV, a game console, a laptop (blogging perhaps!!!!) or a phone. I am no different, I spend quite a lot of time using gadgets, mainly to blog on the computer, play on my phone or watch TV. I even use it to do a lot of my homework. However, I have found lately that many of my school friends spend almost all of their free time plugged in.

I am not saying here that I think technology is a bad thing. It isn't. It is very useful in communication (including blogging), in industry and for fun. I do think though that if you spend all your time online you don't fully appreciate the world around you, so I try not to spend all of my day staring at screens.

I like the idea of doing some sort of unplug, maybe in the summer when I don't need it for revision. I am thinking of blogging about it before hand so you can join in with me. How long do you spend plugged in? Do you think you could give it up for a day or two?

The Goldbergs

Sorry this is late, I wrote this last night and forgot to publish.

A couple of months ago I posted about my embarrassing parents. It turns out that I got off lightly. The Goldbergs is a new comedy series set in the 80s about three kids and their unbelievably embarrassing parents. Their Mum is the worst. Because she wears "mum goggles" she thinks all her kids are perfect. Whenever something doesn't go their way, she will go and shout at whoever necessary to change that. She has even been know to turn up at a cool teenage party to try and make a girl go out with her son!

I wouldn't want to be her daughter when tests are coming up either. I hope nobody's parents are that bad about exams. Click here to see her in action. I really like it, it is not as good as Big Bang but it is still good. It's different to most other comedies like Friends and Big Bang because it's set in the past and is about a family. Here is the trailer.

BGT Canine Scandal

I watched the Britain's Got Talent final on Sunday. It was brilliant, I loved  Issac the 15 year old singer and piano player. I wanted him to win but I liked the dog act too. Matisse is beautiful and so talented. Turns out though, he is not quite as talented as he seemed. On Monday, his trainer Jules revealed that it was actually another look a like dog called Chase (the one in the semi final act I think) that did the tight rope walking stunt, even though we were  tricked into believing that it was Matisse up there.

I think it's not fair that she won £250,000 based on votes from people that did not know what was really going on. Really, I don't think that she should have had other dogs up there at all as they didn't audition, but she definitely can't have secret dogs. Surely ITV must have known about this? They have admitted that they hid the extra dog and said "In hindsight, in the final it would have been better if that was clear."

I am annoyed at Jules as she must have come up with the idea but I am even more angry at ITV. They hold the show and must have known that voters would be upset. Did you watch Britain's Got Talent? What do you think?
