The Scorch Trials

Last weekend, I went with a few of my friends to see the sequel to the Maze Runner, called the Scorch Trials. I have read the books and so thought I knew what to expect. However, the film was very different from the books. It was mostly book 2 with a bit of book 3 mixed in and some extra pieces they had made up altogether. It was still a great film though, and the fact that it was different meant that I still did not know what would happen, so there were still some surprises.

For those of you who don't know the series, these teenagers were trapped in a giant maze as part of scientific trials carried out by a group of governments desperate to save what is left of the population after the Earth is terribly damaged by solar flares. They are trying to find a cure for a disease that slowly eats away at your brain until you lose your humanity. But are this group just making sacrifices for a greater good, or can they no longer be trusted? This is what the teenagers have to find out now they have left the maze and are entering the real world.

This film is much scarier than the first one. Just when you don't expect it, something happens to make you jump. One of my friends actually squealed in the cinema at one point! It is not too scary though, just enough to keep things interesting.

Have you seen the Scorch Trials yet? Tell me what you think of it in the comments. For those of you who haven't here is the trailer.

Draw My Life

As most big YouTubers have done a draw my life video by now I decided they were worth a mention. For those of you who have been living on Mars, the person draws their life on a whiteboard, then speeds up the video to match up with them talking about it. I think they are a great idea. You get to find out lots about the person but it is more interesting than them just sitting there talking about it.

As you know, one of my favourite YouTubers is Dan Howell. Here is Dan Howell's version. I think he did a great job. I did think I could do one of these for my blog, but then I would not have much to draw as I am still at school and therefore couldn't talk about Travelling/Uni/Jobs etc. If you think I still should, comment "Yes" below. If I get a lot, then I might have a go anyway.

The Problem with PSHE

PSHE is probably my least favourite school subject, mostly because I find it boring as I very rarely learn anything new. The curriculum is so repetitive, there are things we have covered 3 times now over the years. Also, we often cover the same stuff in other lessons, such as healthy eating in Biology and Home Ecc. And some of it is just common sense.

It is even worse for me, as my parents have already taught me most of this stuff. In fact, PSHE is made up of stuff your parents should teach you, it is just that not everyones' parents know that stuff and others can't be bothered to teach it to their kids.

So, we can't get rid of PSHE entirely, but I don't want to waste hours of my lesson time being taught stuff I already know (especially now I am doing my GCSEs). I think they should take out everything they teach in other Subjects, and teach us all the rest just once. That way, they could condense it down into one year's worth, and I wouldn't feel like I was wasting so much of my life .

Do you like PSHE? Or do you find it frustrating? Tell me what you think in the comments.

Teachers Are A Strange Species

At first glance, teachers seem a group of serious, organised people who are dedicated to educating the country's children. However on certain occasions, you start to realise that they are actually a group of mental slightly mad people someone allow to entertain educate us. Today was a perfect example.

We went to the Freud museum today in London for Psychology! The morning was very interesting. We travelled up to London, looked around his house and sat on the couch his patients sat on. There was an exhibition on as well called "the festival of the unconscious". We found out lots about Freud and his theories. I liked it, but there are other things I would rather do in London. If you live in or near London it is definitely worth a visit though.

It was what happened afterwards that proves my point about teachers though. We were planning to walk up the road and eat lunch on a "green" underneath a Freud statue. It turned out that this "green" was a mass of trees, weeds and ivy. So, after taking a couple of crazed pictures of our teacher under the statue, we wandered through London in search of a green. Bit difficult to find one of those in London, it turns out. We saw a green area on Google maps and headed towards it, but it was someone's back garden! In the end, we ate on the coach (once it had found us).

The teachers at my school are always having mad moments like this, it makes school much more fun. Are the teachers at your school like this? Tell me in the comments.

Doctor Who New Series!

Did you watch the new episode of Doctor Who last night? I loved it! I have already mentioned a while back how obsessed I am with Doctor Who. It is my favourite TV show and has been since I was 7. So I was obviously very excited for the start of the new series. I thought that the episode last night was a great way to start it all off. It included all the old favourites: it had Daleks, it had the Master (or now Missy) and it had danger. I also particularly liked the scene with Clara's lesson at school, I wish we were told to get our phones out in the middle of English!

I was a bit disappointed that they killed off Clara (or pretended to) in the first episode though. It was obvious that the doctor would find some way to save her as she is supposed to be doing the whole series. I think that would have been a better storyline for the last episode. They also showed a clip telling you how he does it, by going back and killing Davros. There will probably be more to it than that though, as we will find out next week in part two, on Saturday night, BBC 1.

What did you think of this episode of Doctor Who? Did you like it, or did you think that killing Clara ruined it?

Last Friday Night...

No, I am not talking about the Katy Perry song (although I love that too). I am talking about the SNAP dance club event I went to last night! It was even better than I thought it was going to be. It was held at Ferneham hall and we took over the entire building. All the seating was pushed back and the chairs put away in the main room, to create a huge dance space. On stage there were live singers, a DJ playing current chart hits and even dancing competitions.

In another room, there was a surf simulator (it was a Hawaiian themed night) and food being served (hot dogs, sweets and of course, Hawaiian pizza). In another hall, there was neon face paints and limbo competitions. You could even sit at the main bar and drink cocktails! There were also bouncers on the door, like you havein proper night clubs. My friend and I had a great time and we think it would be even better if we went in a big group.

Even if you don't live near by, you can still be part of the fun. SNAP events are all over the country, as they are run by the police as part of their campaign to give teens a safe place to hang out away from danger. We need to support these events because if not enough people go, they will disappear. Have you ever been somewhere like this? Tell me your experience in the comments.

Arctic Roar

In the last couple of years I have become a bit of a fan of Greenpeace. I found out about them from my mum's friend, and have been hooked ever since. I guess I just like the fact someone is doing something about the world's environmental problems, even when the government aren't.

Their current main campaign is against Shell because they have got the go-ahead to drill for oil in the arctic. This will destroy polar bears' homes because of the possible oil spills as well as the negative effects that burning the oil will have on the climate. If the oil is burnt, it will contribute to global warming, which will melt the ice in the arctic even further, destroying the polar bears' homes and rising our sea levels dramatically.

To try and stop them doing this, Greenpeace have constructed a giant polar bear called Aurora who is currently roaring outside Shell's main office with 6 campaigners chained to her. You can meet her by clicking here.

Greenpeace have also made it possible for you to easily E-mail one of Shell's bosses and tell him why you do not want him to destroy the arctic. I am going to do this as it is one of the few ways someone our age can make a difference. Over 50 000 people have already taken this action. Will you?

Migrant Crisis

Sorry I haven't been posting so often lately, I have been very busy as it is the first week back at school. In assembly, our head teacher talked about the migrant crisis. One figure that stood out for me was that the USA has only promised to take half what the UK has promised, even though they have over 5 times our population and over 40 times our land mass. I know that they are very far away from Syria, but as one of the major world powers, you think they would be more helpful.

What do you think about this current crisis? Do you think America should take more people in? How do you think it should be dealt with? You can comment anonymously, even without a log in, so please tell me what you think.`

Year 10

In one of my previous posts, I mentioned that I was a little nervous about starting year 10 because it meant starting the preparation for my GCSEs. I have now been back at school for 3 days and have mixed feelings.

On one hand, it is great being the second oldest year group in the school. The teachers trust you more and the boys have (mostly) stopped behaving like idiots. You are only studying subjects you like (well, unless you hate English and Maths) but you are still not actually taking your exams yet.

However, the teachers like to make sure you are aware of the fact you are starting your GCSEs. The first lesson of every subject starts with the teacher explaining everything you have to learn before your exams. And it is not 2 years away like you might think. The exams are in May, we are in September. That only leaves us with about a year and a half. As if that isn't daunting enough, this is sometimes accompanied by a lecture on how year 10 isn't like year 9, and how you have to work harder and put lots of effort in for this year as well as in year 11.

I have come to the conclusion that the first week of year 10 is depressing but the rest will be great. I'm trying not to think about year 11! What year are you in, have you just started year 10?

Net Books

As a thank you for helping out at her work this summer, my mum's friend has given me her netbook as she no longer uses it. We set it up this evening, and I am blogging on it now! It is great. I have never used one before. They look so small that I thought the screen wouldn't be big enough but it has been fine so far. In fact, I love the fact it is so light and portable. I am currently blogging in my bedroom instead of on the dining room table because of this.

If any of you are thinking of buying a netbook, don't be put off by the small screen, unless you want to use it for photoshop or anything like that where you need a really big, clear image.

Saturday Night TV

On the run up to Christmas, the Saturday night TV schedule always gets very busy. We have Strictly, X Factor, Through the Keyhole and Doctor Who will be coming soon. How we will know what to watch?

As I have mentioned before, I LOVE DOCTOR WHO! It is my favourite TV show and has been since I was 7. That means I have been a Doctor Who fan for half my life! I will definitely be watching. I love the current assistant Clara, and although I was not sure about the new doctor at first he has grown on me. He is still not the best though.

Strictly Come Dancing has started this week with an impressive launch show. As someone who is interested in design, I love looking at all the costumes. I want Susan George to win, as she plays my favourite Call The Midwife character, Trixie.

X Factor has been going for a couple of weeks now, with a new judging panel of Nick, Cheryl, Rita and Simon. Olly Murs and Caroline Flack are doing a brilliant job of replacing Dermot as well. We have seen some brilliant, some terrible and some just plain weird acts so far, but then it wouldn't be the X factor if we didn't!

On last is Keith Lemon's through the keyhole. In this hilarious show Keith noses round celebrities houses in the hope of collecting enough clues to help his panel guess who lives there. Click here to see him in action.

What will you be watching? Tell me in the comments?

10 Things You Will Only Understand If You're An Only Child

This is the first time I have done this sort of post, but they are popular on other sites so I thought I would try it out. Tell me what you think of it in the comments. I am an only child, so I thought this might be a good one to start off with.

1. That parents with one child are FAR more over-protective than ones with several.

2. That your parents are your playmates.

3. That you are not necessarily spoilt, you just get lots of attention.

4. That there is never anyone to mess up and make you look good.

5. That spending time alone is actually quite fun.

6. That you don't always have to work in a group.

7. That talking to adults is often more interesting that talking to other children.

8. That you have never actually been in a fight.

9. That reading about large families is interesting.

10. That you are close to (some of) your cousins.

Pink!

We are going to be seeing a lot of pink around this Autumn. It is one of the main colours this season. From hot pink to soft shell colours, there is a shade for everyone. Here is my selection from New Look, the home of all things current.

Are You Back At School?

Many schools are going back today or tomorrow, but I luckily have until next Monday -yay! Hopefully, the weather will hold out and it won't get too wintery. Are you back at school yet?

This year, I am in year 10. I will be starting my GCSE courses in the subjects I picked last year in my options that weren't options (see previous post- Feb). At the start of the summer, I was completely terrified about this, but I feel much more ready now. I think this has something to do with the fact that I had some Textiles GCSE work to do over the holidays. Although I am all too aware that it will count towards my GCSE coursework, I did it without a problem and this has given me a little more confidence. If I can do that, hopefully, I will be able to do the work this coming year.

Are you starting your GCSEs next year? How do you feel about it?
